School Bullying: Causes and EffectsSchool Bullying: Causes and Effects

0 Comments 12:00 am

School bullying is regular harmful behavior directed towards one student to another.

It can be in the form of groups for both the attacker/s and the victim/s and the offenses usually take place within or in close proximity of an educational institution.

Bullying incidents among school aged children has always been a serious issue. Since both the perpetrator and the victim are almost always minors,it makes the issue a much more sensitive topic.

Causes

Stress. Kids have underdeveloped coping systems. When they are under stressful situations, some kids turn to negative behavior as a defense mechanism. Bullying becomes their outlet and they are provided immediate relief.

Insecurity and Power. These two seemingly unrelated topics serve the critical combination that causes kids to display their strengths and capacity through negative behavior.

Wanting to prove themselves but not having the right channels to do so makes them desperate to do something that can make them feel superior.

Even when modern society promotes equality and diversity, there will be social influences that make kids think they can gather power through oppression of fellow schoolmates. Displaying strengths, whether it physical or social can boost one’s confidence, however irrational that can be.

Pressure from Peers. An individual can be pressured doing things that are normal for the group they identify with. Wanting to be accepted by your peers is a strong driving force that can make you commit deeds that are otherwise unthinkable to you as an individual.

Dysfunctional Family. A kid’s attitude is greatly influenced by their parents and siblings.

Having a home where they themselves become victims can make them believe that such is the correct way of interacting with others.

Guidance plays a key part in building one’s character. If that factor is taken out and instead replaced by harmful examples,it’s natural for kids to copy the problematic behavior.

Effects

Physical Damages. Physical assault, especially among boys,is common. Sometimes disguised as friendly rough housing,it makes it easier for the attackers to do it in plain sight.

Cuts and bruises heal, but they can leave scars and permanent injuries on a victim.

Excessive fear and anxiety cause inability to sleep and lack of appetite. Some can also turn to excessive sleeping and eating to seek comfort from the abusive situation.

Mental Damages. Being subjected to abuse can easily impair one’s mental and emotional capacity.

Depression and anxiety are the common lasting effects of bullying.

The whole situation is both harmful and confusing for children. Since the cause of the offenses are not actually related to the subject of bullying,it makes finding the reason extremely frustrating.

Victims display poor performance in school and lack of confidence in simple tasks. The combination of pain and self-doubt leads to lower self-esteem.

Paranoia can also be instilled in one’s mind when they are consistently exposed to assaults. It limits the victim’s ability to have healthy relationships even when the source of such trauma is already gone.

Efforts on a Solution

Various organizations have been trying to resolve the subject by implementing strict and proactive policies. They have offered mediations and sanctions to discourage such behavior.

Aside from public institutions, private organizations are also investing time and effort to help the parties involved overcome the incidents and guide them to a normal life. A company from Hong Kong even provides individual conselling treatments to make sure personal perspectives are taken into account.

The best relief usually comes from the people closest to the victim. Although that is not a solution in itself, giving emotional support  can help overcome the hurdles much easier.
